Classifying Configuration Items
During the discovery process, data about each CI are recorded from the network probes. The Resource Type Refinement tool then takes the aggregated data from all the network probes and applies a set of rules to further refine the resource type of the CI. If the Resource Type Refinement tool determines that the CI is incorrectly classified, the resource type is modified.
Services running on machines are treated as separate CIs that are children of the machine on which the service was discovered.
Some resource types that are applied are Windows Server, Other, Web Service, SQL Server, IIS, and Apache.
Configuration Item Class
When resources are imported into Asset Discovery Expert , they are classified as either Managed, Unmanaged, or Unclassified. If a resource already exists, it is either managed or unmanaged. If a resource does not exist, it is unclassified. The unclassified state also applies to CIs that were deleted but not removed from the network. If the resource was not disconnected from the network when the scan was run, the ADE will rediscover the CI.
You can change the CI class inside of the CMDB or the Administration module, depending on your license.
